DESCRIPTION:Download poster\nIn the hands of Roman authors\, Platonic philosophy is not a set of literal translations of Plato’s dialogues; they are works of interpretation\, transformation\, and genuine philosophy. Our workshop—Plato in Roman Philosophy—explores the dynamic relationship between the two: how do the conceptual\, linguistic\, social and institutional paradigms of our Roman authors ‘translate’ Plato for a Roman audience? And in turn\, how does Platonic philosophy shape the course and discourse of Roman intellectual life? The workshop\, hosted by the Collaborative Specialization in Ancient & Medieval Philosophy (CSAMP) and the Centre for Medieval Studies (CMS) at the University of Toronto\, will bring together researchers to explore how we might apply the historicism that has illuminated Roman philosophers of the late Republic to the varied traditions surrounding Plato’s works.
